It’s bitterly cold in Chicago today, but that’s not stopping me from thinking ahead to this summer’s plan to swing into Philly to see my big sister. I’ve never been there when the humidity and heat aren’t mega-oppresive, necessitating multiple trips for water ice. That’s Phillyspeak for Italian Ice, which is everywhere, BECAUSE IT’S DELICIOUS.
I’m sure the locals all have their faves, but I have always liked Rita’s for its proximity to my sister’s house, and it is a life-saver! For the past 20 years on the First Day of Spring, they have given out free cups of Italian Ice. The promotion starts at noon, and ends at 9:00 p.m. Last year they gave out 1.2 million cups! No coupon is needed, go here to find the Rita’s nearest you…and have one for me!
So this is probably a tradition for most people after 20 years, and their competitors at Frozen Peaks have responded with a deal as well. Today, from 4:00 -7:00 p.m., you will receive a free 5 oz. Froyo while supplies last.If you’re in NYC or New Jersey, go here to find out if you’re close to a branch!
Lil’ Scout and her Dad will eat cold stuff anytime-we often stop at the Italian Ice spot, and then get a coffee for me. No Frozen Peaks or Rita’s in Chi-town, but they might patronize Dairy Queen to celebrate the vernal equinox, as it is March, a.k.a. Blizzard Month.
The promotion is a Buy One Blizzard (at regular price), Get One (equal or smaller size) for $.99, a pretty good deal for those who don’t need the heat to get their ice creamy fix. Some locations in Michigan have reported a free cone deal for today from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., but you might want to call ahead if it matters to you. Find your nearest DQ here before March 24th when the BOGO promotion ends!
I drink iced tea all year, but only make it from scratch during warm weather. Are you always up for icy treats like my family, regardless of the soul-crushing cold outside? What’s your out-of-season habit that others find…umm….interesting?
