Senior general management for companies in Europe, part-time and on an ongoing basis. A fractional CEO takes ownership of strategy, the leadership team and the operating rhythm when your company needs an experienced leader at the top, but not yet, or no longer, a full-time one.
THE ROLE
Companies rarely begin by deciding they need a part-time CEO. They begin from a situation: an owner who wants to step back from day-to-day management, a spin-off or subsidiary that needs a credible leader, a founding team that is strong in product or research but has never run a company, or a board that needs senior leadership through a transition. A fractional CEO is the senior owner of exactly that situation, working with you one to three days a week on an ongoing basis.
The role is accountable for outcomes, not occasional advice. A fractional CEO sets and runs the strategy, builds and leads the leadership team, puts a management system in place (planning, targets, reporting and a clear decision rhythm), represents the company to the board, investors, banks and key partners, and owns the result the same way a permanent CEO would.
The CEO seat is the one where part-time is hardest, and it is worth being honest about that. A CEO is also the visible face of the company and the last point of escalation. Fractional works when three things are in place: a leadership team or co-founder who runs daily operations, clear decision rights between the fractional CEO, the owners and that team, and a fixed rhythm of leadership meetings and board reporting. Where the job is daily crisis management, a full-time interim CEO is usually the better fit.
Most fractional CEOs have run companies themselves, as founders, managing directors or division heads, some with an exit behind them, and work with a small number of companies in parallel. They bring pattern recognition from successions, fundraising rounds, market entries and restructurings, and can point to organisations they left in better shape rather than to plans that never changed how the company was run.
The distinction from a coach or an advisor matters. A coach develops the current CEO, and an advisor or board member gives input from the outside. A fractional CEO carries the function and the decisions over time. Many engagements also include the handover: defining the profile of the permanent CEO, running the search and bringing the successor in cleanly.
THE DECISION
Two clear profiles and a pragmatic middle path if you are between them.
Hire Fractional When
Hire Fulltime When
Pragmatic Middle-Path
These are rarely the only two options, and the honest answer is often a sequence. A fractional CEO leads part-time on an ongoing basis and is accountable for outcomes. An interim CEO fills the seat full-time for a defined period, usually through a crisis or a vacancy. A CEO coach develops the person already in the role. A non-executive chair or board member supervises and advises without running the company. Many companies start with a fractional CEO to build the leadership team and the management system, then hire a permanent CEO with the fractional leader running the search, and keep that person on the board or as an advisor afterwards.

Treat every figure as indicative; rates vary with the country, the sector, the size of the company and how much of the week you need. As a reference point, the DDIM Interim Management Market Study 2026 puts the average German interim day rate at EUR 1,317, and the INIMA European survey 2026 puts the European average at EUR 985. General-management mandates carry the most responsibility and usually sit above those averages. At one to two days per week, the German average alone works out at roughly EUR 5,500 to 11,500 per month, more for senior profiles. For comparison, the BBE salary study 2025 puts the average total compensation of a GmbH managing director in Germany at around EUR 180,000 a year, from about EUR 150,000 in small companies to more than EUR 240,000 above EUR 25 million in revenue, before employer costs and the cost of a search.
Most fractional CEOs work one to three days per week, often more intensively in the first weeks while the leadership team, priorities and reporting are set up, then settling into a fixed rhythm. Engagements run from a few months to several years, depending on whether the goal is a handover, a succession or ongoing leadership. Working with a small number of companies in parallel is the standard model, and good fractional CEOs avoid direct competitors. Fractionista requires executives to disclose all active engagements to their clients.
Often yes. Depending on the country and the legal form, a fractional CEO can be appointed as a registered managing director or statutory director (for example Geschäftsführer of a GmbH), or can lead the company without that appointment while an owner or another director keeps it. An appointment brings the legal duties and personal liability of the office, so D&O insurance, the service agreement and the social security status of the executive need to be settled up front, and the rules differ between countries. This is general orientation, not legal or tax advice. Please consult your own legal and tax advisers for your specific situation.
A fractional CEO leads the company part-time on an ongoing basis and is accountable for outcomes. An interim CEO fills the seat full-time for a defined period, usually during a crisis, a vacancy or a turnaround. A CEO coach works with the current CEO on their own development but does not lead the company. A non-executive chair leads the board, supervises management and advises, but does not run operations. If you need someone to own the leadership of the company part-time, hire fractionally.
